Firstly a little about the position.
I'd like you to think of a movie when someone is handling , picking up ,
or swinging a sword/knife. Are these sounds really made my the knife ?
Well of course not . A sword lifted from the ground or off wood will make
little to no noise what so ever. However the sword is synonymous with a sort
of metallic , metal on metal sound.
Or another example would be door bells . There is never someone pushing a
doorbell live on set , all these sound effects are added later.
What would be required of you would be to manufacture and create all these sounds.
Which would range from the mentioned "synthetic sounds" like door bells , mobile phones ,
necessary clicks and button pushes , vehicle noises and basic background noise .
The other type of sound effects required by you would be "natural sounds" these are
used throughout the film and television . And some examples would be fight scenes ,
the punches and slaps would be created and edited by you , usually made by punching
bags , cabbages , snapping fruit and veg to get a cracking sound . Standing and stomping
on fruit to get 'wet noise' for more bloody or gory scene dubbing.
There are two ways we add the sfx to the relivant media.
1 - You can do it live . That usually entails you watching the the video media live and adding
in the sounds live in the studio with various props.This is usually done with at least 2 people.
And can be quite beneficial when working under a deadline .
2 - You can make a list of your required sounds . Go out into where ever is necessary to get the appropriate
sounds and record them there . Then you can cut edit and add them to the timeline when needed.
While this does produce a more professional final product it can be quite tedious to sync up
the sound to the action with out a marker.
A basic knowledge of sound would be an asset , but not 100% necessary.
What we are looking for here is someone with a fresh ear . Who can find new and innovating
sounds for the everyday actions and events we take for granted with visual and auditory media.
The ideal candidate will be given a basic training and will be shown how to use all the apparatus
digital recorders , direction mics , pro-tools and other software .
This could suit as a part time or a full-time position.It all depends on how much you want to do
and how many hows you want to put into this.
